Organize For More Leisure

Who has not had their time and energy consumed by an organization or club? Let’s face it; many organizations are geared toward consuming every available hour that a person has to offer. Many organizations I encounter, from churches/religious groups, to charitable organizations, to volunteer groups, to clubs, most are kept running by a small number of persons who are extremely committed to the cause, and who work tirelessly to keep it going. Observe most of the groups to which you belong and you discover a handful of people doing most of the work that keep the wheels turning. In the occasional sports club or leisure group I have been involved, it was one or no more than two people who kept the group corralled. If asked why members of the total group don’t participate in the administration of the club, there unanimity: “I don’t have time for the meetings.” What a delight it is to discover other models of doing business, to discover organizations that are designed for full involvement, but not consumption of its members. This kind of organization is light on meetings and heavy on team delegation. Every once in awhile I come across this kind of group and there are keys to their effectiveness: Lots of emphasis on team and small group responsibility- These groups put motivated people in charge of a task, give them support, and get out of the way. It makes for fewer meetings, and often more gets done. Small groups of three to four people tackling a specific task will almost always bring better results than a whole board or committee dealing with the issue. Emphasize future programs and coming events vs. past happenings- Effective groups spend more time on planning the future, and less dissecting the past. There is always the need to evaluate, but the reason for evaluation is an improved future. Give me an organization focused on the future, and I will show you one that has great potential. Do as much work by phone/email as possible- Many meetings can be pre-empted by the exchange of emails or phone call and coming to a group consensus without ever scheduling a time and place. Take advantage. Set meeting end times and stick to them- It is amazing what can get done in a short amount of time when there is an expectation of an end time for a meeting. Practice humor and joy as a part of meeting times- When you have to meet face to face, a meeting should be led with a sense of humor and with a light touch. People will come back to a joyful experience. See if these hints might lead to more leisure in your life. Published at:

Starting Your Family Search-Organize Family Keepsakes Into a Family Tree

Many of us have attics and basements filled with keepsakes of our family. We look at old photo albums and yearbooks and think we should try to organize all our family pictures and documents and put them in one place. The older we become the more important our past and our family history becomes. We want to remember and treasure the knowledge we have and to learn more about our family tree. As you sit amongst the rubble of your family memorabilia you start to ask yourself, “how can I possible put all this in some kind of order”? What you need to do is begin a family tree. You will need charts and templates to help you know how to begin. They are easy to obtain from various websites. You may not realize it yet, but you have chosen to take on the task of being your family’s historian. In doing so you will have to decide on what information that you already know. Beginning with birth records for you and your immediate family. Followed by marriage and death records if applicable. When you have an idea of how you are going to begin and what knowledge you have already, you are going to start researching your family tree. Starting with grandparents and great grandparents is always best. With one side of the family at a time. Getting what information about them first in your research is best. The date and place of birth. Marriages if more then one. Date and place of death. Remember those old photo albums that may have given you the idea of a family tree in the first place. Gather all of them and start checking them for old pictures of relatives. Many times people put dates and the place the picture was taken. If your grandparents are from the WWII era, most likely you will find letters. During the war, everyone corresponded with a solider. These wonderful pieces of the past are full of information about where people were and what they were doing in that time. When finding old papers, photographs and letters take into consideration on how to preserve these valuable documents for future generations. The number one rule for any kind of genealogy research is how to organize all the bits of papers, notes, and letters you are going to discover in your search. It can be quite overwhelming at first when you are confronted with the mass amount of paper and document either you finds or people start giving to you as the family historian. It will be up to you how to keep certain records and which of them will be useful to your genealogy search. Then you will have to put them in files according to family and dates. When you start uncovering, more and more information about your family history, then you must decide if you want to go further and invest in a genealogy website or software program. If you want to do that then you must select one that is right for you. What kinds of family tree are you interested in doing. Many people want a very detailed record with dates and facts and names. Others enjoy the stories that go along with each generation. Some may have been exaggerated over the years but are still fun to hear about. Families tend to gossip, that is nothing new. Your job as family historian is to try to separate fact from fiction but still keep it interesting. You will have to acquire quite a few skills in your new position. Just the complying of all the paper work and filing it, then filling out your charts and templates to keep all your information organized. That is where sometimes is worth investing in a genealogy software program that can help you with all your research. What kind of family tree you end up with is entirely up to you. You should decide from the beginning of how deep you want to dig and how far back you intend to go. When it is completed, what form you want it to be in is another question. You can have it on book form, which is nice because you can leave it out for everyone to see. Of course, in the electronic age we live in, you can make it on a DVD and send out to your relatives. You can add voice and music and make a mini movie of your family tree. Which ever you decide the fact that you made a family tree for everyone to have generations to come are a wonderful accomplishment. The next family get together will be full of questions, stories and hopefully much laughter about your family. The best part for the younger members of the family is to learn what their grandparents and great grandparents had to overcome to make a life for themselves. Family trees are a great way to teach young people to respect their elders and to thank them for everything they have done to give them a better life. Published at:

Family vacation travel time is supposed to be a time of family bonding. Of doing things together and making memories while also staying on a budget and being safe. This list of top vacation spots will give you ideas on how to make your family travel vacations worthwhile.

1. Orlando, Florida – Orlando is known as the theme park capital of the world! Cancun’s 25-kilometer Hotel Zone has shopping, dining, urban pleasures and beaches. What Happened to the Family Road Trip?

Remember the days when you would cram into a car with your family for a long vacation trip to see either the beach or part of your extended family? You likely only had a Walkman as your personal entertainment or perhaps a book to read when the road was smooth. These days the long road trips are becoming much easier with the larger cars and the bountiful in-cabin amenities available. Passengers can now enjoy DVDs, MP3s players, portable game systems, or satellite radio to pass the time. Family road trips now have more life and become more enjoyable for all involved.

I recently took my family out on a long road trip from Wichita, Kansas to the mountains of Colorado. Along the way we snapped a few pictures and stopped at some of the lesser known landmarks that are unique and interesting in their own way. During our trip I remember stopping to see the “Largest Hand Dug Well” in Greensburg, Kansas. This is by no means Mount Rushmore, but it is certainly a sight to see if it is along your route. We would have never stopped there if it had not been for a friend’s recommendation.

One other road trip we stopped at the bustling town of Little America, Wyoming just outside Cheyenne. Little America is just that; a colloquial and unique location with good hospitality and enough souvenirs for everyone you know. This was another location that we heard about from a friend and we would have missed had we blinked while on the road. Stopping to enjoy a bit of our homeland made the trip more enjoyable as well as relaxed.

Let’s bring back the days of leisure family road trips and avoid the headaches of airport security. At least on the road you are able to pick your own entertainment, stretch your legs at unique locations, and plan your route or departure time based upon the weather. Enjoy the ride.

Cooking and Dinnertime Create Precious Memories and Family Time

Jackie told me she made her late Aunt Lucy’s cinnamon buns. As she was making them, a flood of warm, wonderful memories came over her. She vividly remembered Aunt Lucy, how she looked, how her kitchen smelled, how Aunt Lucy made her feel as they laughed and shared conversation. The love Aunt Lucy had for Jackie came back in detail; she felt as if her aunt was beside her every step of the way. The buns tasted good, but the real delight was the pleasure of remembering someone for whom she had great affection. My friend wouldn’t have that memory if her aunt had picked up the buns at a bakery.

Before our wedding, my husband requested that I learn how to make his mother’s spaghetti sauce. Wanting to please, I spent an afternoon with Eleanor diligently writing down everything she did in order to recreate this sauce. I learned how to make the sauce successfully and have made it many times in twenty-eight years. What amazes me is how making this one recipe brings back wonderful memories of Eleanor. I imagine her learning the recipe from her mother-in-law and I easily recall all of the stories I know about those two women. Food connects you to people, places and times. Food memories are powerful because they involve all of the senses: taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound.

Dinnertime is a way to create memories that last a lifetime. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and to reinforce them physically and emotionally. Children learn at the dinner table when their parents talk about overcoming the day’s challenges. Everyone laughs when someone shares a funny story. When you are sitting and talking, you have an opportunity to encourage your family and provide support. You can look your children and spouse in their eyes and give them undivided attention. You learn what is going on in their lives the good, bad, the frustrations, wins, and the trials. You listen to their goals, desires, and dreams.

Food cooked from scratch creates the atmosphere to talk and listen. The drive-through does not. The very nature of fast food means grab and go. A Styrofoam container doesn’t set the stage for a long conversation. Heating up something instantly doesn’t give you time to relax, unwind and think. On the other hand, if a home-cooked meal is in front of you, you stop, look it over, breath deeply and taste with great anticipation. It’s comforting, warm and wonderful and it creates a mood to share, reconnect, and spend time together. A home-cooked meal says I care; you feel important and loved. A leisurely family dinner is a source of emotional and physical refreshment. It’s a time to recharge your batteries and to gain a new perspective. It will remind you why you work so hard.

Cooking dinner isn’t the only way to show love and care, but eating is an activity everyone participates in and food is a language everyone understands. You don’t have to be a gourmet cook to have a happy home life, but taking the time to cook for your family, to create an atmosphere to reconnect, to create warm memories, or to create a fun time will always serve you well.

Gigi Centaro taught herself how to cook over 28 years of trial and error in the kitchen. She completely understands the frustration and apprehension the inexperienced cook faces. Gigi is passionate about taking the difficulty and mystery out of cooking in order to help others learn how to cook easily. Her expertise comes from her ability to make complicated recipes and cooking techniques easy for anyone to understand. Her new cookbook, Let’s Cook Tonight [], is about making and sharing healthy, great tasting meals for yourself, your friends and your family.

Family Vacation Travel Activities on the Beach

Family vacation travel time is a great excuse to go to the beach. You get to enjoy the sun and surf while also spending time enjoying a quality leisure family vacation.

Spending time at the beach usually constitutes going for a long weekend, but sometimes staying 3-4 days at the beach can get a little repetitive. How do you keep your children active at the beach? What fun summer activities can you do? We’ve got you covered.

Family travel vacations are the perfect time to start a new hobby, or continue with a project you never finished when you were home. Here are some basic summer beach activities that can be done between just you and a child, or the whole family!

* Shell collecting * Exploring tide pools * Harvesting shellfish * Photography * Flying a kite * Catching fish bait * Bird watching * Beach volleyball * Picnics * Hiking

Some of these activities seem pretty basic, but others can be the beginning of multiple fun projects with your family. The shells you’ve collected could be glued to picture frames or put in vases to make centerpieces. You can make a picture collage of your trip with the pictures you took. Photography can also be a way to incorporate your children into something special that usually only mommy and daddy get to do. Family vacation travel time can sometimes be the perfect time to allow kids to do something they wouldn’t normally get to do… like use the “big kid” camera.

Some beaches don’t allow harvesting shellfish, but for those that do, the adventure and rush of collecting clams, oysters, mussels and bay scallops bring families and children the feeling of being stranded on an island, harvesting their own food to survive! Creating a story to go along with your “hunt” is a great activity that can get the whole family involved.

If your kids are slightly older, catching fishing bait can be very popular. Your kids can catch minnows, bait fish, crabs, shrimp and other baits by throwing a small cast net or seines out to sea and dragging it back in.
